Circle
The circle is the area contained in a circumference.
El círculo representa con frecuencia el sol, principalmente si está rodeada de rayos.
It can also represent perfection and eternity.
The Circle as perfection
The representation of the circle as perfection is ancient. In the West it has been especially developed by Jung.
According to Jung, the square represents the man who has not achieved inner unity; the next state would be the octagon, which would finally give way to the circle, which represents the man who has reached his final stage of perfection.
There is a very frequent relationship between the square and the circle, for example, in the mandalas of India or Tibet, or many Chinese symbols.
In addition to the mandalas, the symbol of the square-circle transition has been developed by the author Huê la mystérieuse, Louis Chochod, where he relates them to the Five Tigers of Vietnamese mythology, where they are symbols of the protective force of the Center and the Four Cardinal Points.
The circle and the mandalas according to Jung
This meaning of the circle as perfection was developed by Jung from the mandalas.
Because mandala means precisely “Circle”, especially “Sacred Circle”. However, we could also find the mandala in the form of a flower or cross and even a wheel, in most cases with a strong tendency to the number four, which resembles the Pythagorean tetraktys.
Jung developed his ideas about the mandala in his work “The mandalas and their symbolism”. For him “the mandala is intimately related to the individual, to the self and is a symbolic representation that shows the psychic and individual development of people”.
